Dominic Ongwen, der einst eine führende Rolle innerhalb der LRA innehatte, muss sich nun vor dem Internationalen Strafgerichtshof in Den Haag verantworten. Der ehemalige Kindersoldat, der im frühen Alter von neun Jahren entführt wurde, entwickelte sich selbst zu einem Täter.
Ongwens Verteidiger ist Krispus Ayena, ein Mann, dessen Brüder der Brutalität der LRA zum Opfer fielen. Ayena begibt sich auf eine Reise nach Uganda, um zu verstehen, wie die Gesellschaft das von der LRA verursachte Trauma heilen kann und wie ehemalige Kindersoldaten am besten wieder in ihre Gemeinschaften integriert werden können. Uganda bore witness to unimaginable horrors as Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) unleashed unspeakable atrocities upon its civilian population, resulting in the tragic loss of 100,000 lives and the abduction of nearly 100,000 innocent children. Dominic Ongwen, who once held a prominent role within the LRA, now faces trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Abducted at the tender age of nine, this former child soldier evolved into a perpetrator himself.
Leading Ongwen’s defense is Krispus Ayena, a man whose own brothers fell victim to the LRA’s brutality. Ayena embarks on a journey to Uganda, seeking to understand how society can heal from the trauma inflicted by the LRA and how best to reintegrate former child soldiers into their communities. This quest raises profound questions: Are these young soldiers to be solely held accountable for their actions, or are they, too, victims of circumstances beyond their control?
