„Das Glück der Erde liegt auf dem Rücken der Pferde“, heißt es. Nicht für Sila und Firman, die wie viele andere Jungen traditionell als Kinderjockeys in Sumbawa, eine der ärmsten Regionen Indonesiens, arbeiten. Der Erfolg der kleinen Reiter sichert oft den Lebensunterhalt der gesamten Familie und so ist der Kampf um den Sieg hart. Jedes Rennen entscheidet über die Zukunft der Jockeys, Verletzungen und Unfälle gehören zum Alltag. Fernab der Rennbahn spielen die zwei Freunde Fußball, reiten am Strand, lachen und raufen sich. Doch das nächste Rennen wartet und mit ihm die Angst vor dem Misserfolg.
„The way to heaven is on horseback“ an old saying that rings true – unless you are a five-year-old jockey in Indonesia who risks life and death in every race. Like Sila and Firman, who live on the impoverished island of Sumbawa, where horse racing with small children has a long tradition. The success of the little riders often secures the livelihood of the whole family and so the fight for victory is hard, injuries and accidents are part of daily life. Far away from the race track, the boys play football, ride their horses on the beach, laugh and climb. But the next race waits and with it the fear of failure.
