Die buntgestrichene Casa Ymca im Zentrum der Grenzstadt Tijuana ist ein lebhafter Ort: In der Kantine wird aus großen Töpfen Essen ausgegeben, im Innenhof spielen Kinder. Nebenan unterrichtet eine Lehrerin in einem improvisierten Klassenzimmer Englisch. LEJOS DE CASA führt uns in die Welt eines Wohnheims, in dem Kinder und Jugendliche auf die Entscheidung über ihre Asylanträge an die USA warten und zeigt den im Haus allgegenwärtigen Trubel, die Ungewissheit und Traurigkeit. Einige der oft tausende Kilometer allein gereisten Mädchen und Jungen sind noch keine zehn Jahre alt. Manche fliehen vor den Narco-Gangs in der Heimat, andere vor einem Leben in Armut und Perspektivlosigkeit. In der Casa Ymca schöpfen viele wieder Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben.
The brightly painted Casa Ymca in the centre of the border city of Tijuana is a lively place: Food is served from large pots in the canteen, children play in the courtyard. Next door, a teacher is teaching English in an improvised classroom. LEJOS DE CASA takes us into the world of a hostel where children and young people wait for a decision on their asylum applications to the USA and shows the hustle and bustle, uncertainty and sadness that are omnipresent in the house. Some of the girls and boys, who often travel thousands of kilometres alone, are not yet ten years old. Some are fleeing from narco gangs in their home country, others from a life of poverty and lack of prospects. At Casa Ymca, many of them regain hope for a better life.
