The word „Aswang“ in Filipino folklore refers to a dreaded demon. After Rodrigo Duterte was elected Philippine president in 2016, these spirits manifested themselves in the real world and began to roam the streets of Manila. Thousands of people were killed, kidnapped and tortured by police commandos and assassins. Dutertes gives the police officers a free hand in the use of brutal violence, which is especially directed against the poorest sections of society. Thus the small drug users are persecuted instead of the big drug lords. The film is a shocking account of unprecedented violence and the moral bankruptcy of a regime that still enjoys the support of voters.
